In the Sanctuary below the dome, the High Altar is placed in a setting of nobility, distinct from its surroundings. The assembly is arranged around the Sanctuary to form one unified congregation directed toward the focus. The Sanctuary area is further distinguished in design and symbolism through the use of materials that convey its greater stature and place in the hierarchy of progressive solemnity. Carved into the face of the main altar is the ancient Christogram, IHS, the ancient rendering of Christ's name, which is in recognition to the Cathedral's dedication to the Holy Name of Jesus.
